The original film didn't explain much about the history of Broly's powers or why he has them other than the fact that he was The Legendary Super Saiyan. Dragon Ball Super: Broly dives deep and explains that while Paragus had to remove Broly's tail due to his uncontrollable rage and power in his Great Ape form, the powerful warrior is still able to tap into those abilities as he grows angrier. Add this to the fact that his father raised him in hatred for those who banished them and these reasons allow him to reach power levels higher than other Saiyans, including our favorite heroes.
He's pure evil. Not only does he have friends in Cheelai, Lemo, and the creature from Vampa, Ba, but he also doesn't like fighting much, regardless of how good he is at it. Instead of being an evil villain, he's simply a villain because of his situation, his struggle to survive a destitute planet, and the way he was raised by his father.
Throughout the film, we get to see the softer side of Broly shine through on multiple occasions. With Broly proving to be a force unstoppable by both Vegeta and Goku by themselves due to his ability to adapt and seemingly unlimited power resources, our heroes are forced to merge together as one using the Metamoran Fusion Dance. This not only gives out heroes enough strength to match the powerful Broly, but it also gives us a new beginning for the merged character of Gogeta that fans have seen in the past.
During the original film, Broly is eventually defeated and destroyed by Goku, but this time around he is spared as his friends Cheelai and Lemo round up the Dragon Balls and save his life by wishing he gets sent back to Planet Vampa when it became clear he could not prevail over Gogeta. Because of his inherent goodness, despite his penchant for violence, Broly is able to leave Earth, calm down, and have a real future.
He seemed quite sure he was going to win. Well, think about how Broly was prior to the fight. His power was being suppressed, so he couldn't access his full strength.
When he saw Goku on the second day, he realized that this was the day his vision had showed him "dying", which was why he was so afraid, and with his power suppressed, he knew it would happen. In his desperation to prevent the vision from happening, he broke through his restraints and gained access to his true power. With his full power now available, he was sure he would be able to prevent the vision of his death from happening, which was why he was so confident, possibly even trying to show himself that he had nothing to worry about.
But now let's ask the big question. Could you chalk it up to him simply being the Legendary Super Saiyan, and therefore he has mysterious powers? Well, maybe but I have a better explanation for it. This is the theory I came up with that goes along with this future vision theme. Broly was powerful, there's no denying that.
Even as a baby, he had a power level of 10, But fighters don't always rely solely on their own power. They also draw in power from around them. We've seen characters do this countless times throughout the series. In fact, this is true of real life too, such as how people, plants, and animals draw in energy from the sun. During the fight, Goku and Pan slowly get weaker.
Haze explains its because his pollution has killed off the environment, and so there is no longer any energy for them to draw from. For further evidence of drawing in energy from one's surroundings, just look at how Broly attacks, Pretty much any time a character uses a ki attack, the energy simply pops up from their hand or whatever, basically coming from within them.
But with Broly, most of the time energy is condensed from outward and then gathers in his hand or whatever , which he then unleashes. So we've seen physical proof that Broly draws in power and energy from his surroundings, far more so than any other character. This could actually be a trait for the LSSJ, which is partly why he's so powerful.
As a baby, Broly was already really strong, and likely didn't have as much control over his power, so its even more likely that he drew in energy from around more so than usual.
And what, or should I saw, who was there for him to draw energy from that could provide him with a vision of the future? That's right, Bardock. As we saw, the psychic energy that provides visions of the future can be passed around. When Bardock briefly went to visit Goku, whom Broly was sleeping next to, it's possible, even likely, that Broly drew in some of his psychic power. This is what granted him a vision of the future. And since Goku was crying, Broly focused on him, and the psychic power he had drawn in from Bardock showed him a vision of the future involving the two of them.
And that vision was of Goku defeating Broly. Broly like most Saiyans including King Vegeta and his son Vegeta has deep-rooted pride in Saiyan strength. Broly and Vegeta are Saiyans who do not want to seem or look weak. However, unlike Broly, his power is always building up to a higher level to a point of overflowing.
Broly wants to kill Goku and prove to everyone that he is a strong Saiyan to the stronger Super Saiyan. When it comes down to the Saiyan birth, it used to be that a Siayn would be classified as an Elite or low-class based on their birth power level. Despite their ability as a warrior race to fight and improve while getting Zenkai Boost. They only rely on birth power levels. Saiyan philosophy believes that only a high power level Saiyan will become strong, while a weak Saiyan will become a weak low-class.
Newborns like Vegeta and Nappa are kept on the planet trained and developed into Elite warriors. The philosophical Saiyan race conflict around the Saiyan arc, particularly between Goku and Vegeta.
Vegeta and Nappa when they arrived on earth, believe that their strength is invisible to that of humans or other races. Nevertheless, Goku learns this from his masters and continues to prove this point again and again throughout the series of Dragon Ball.
Broly on the other hand is the pure embodiment of the Legendary Saiyan. The Saiyans believe in natural-born talent.
