There is! It's not even a 21st century cash-grab, either; it premiered in Animated Halloween specials were made, they just weren't super memorable, and with the exception of The Great Pumpkin , they haven't survived to become TV staples. But for a few years at least, there was Garfield's Halloween Adventure.
Originally a comic-strip character, Jim Davis's Garfield had, by the mid s, become fodder for endless merchandising, from phones , to toys, to suction-cup figures for your car window.
Garfield's appeal was his simplicity. He was a lazy orange cat with a deadpan delivery; he hated Mondays and loved lasagna or any food, really, but mostly lasagna ; he looked upon his fellow pets like Odie the dog and Nermal the kitten with disdain. But three years before that, it was Garfield's Halloween Adventure , a one-off special where Garfield gets caught up in the Halloween spirit, he and Odie go trick-or-treating, and they come across some p-p-p-pirate ghosts.
I began my rewatch with fairly significant skepticism. Surely I would watch it again and see that there was nothing to be scared of, that I was merely being what is technically called a "fraidy cat.
What is it about test patterns that freak me out so much? Not that I run out of the room if I see one or anything, but they are low-key unsettling. Maybe it's because they're often used in horror as a shorthand for "It's incredibly late at night, so late that nobody is even awake to make television happen. If you're seeing this test pattern, there's every chance that you are the only living creature awake at this moment. Folks, get ready to meet Binky the Clown:. People are scared of clowns because clowns are inherently scary!
Grown adults disguising themselves in ghostly white makeup topped with big blood-red features, acting exaggeratedly friendly? Sometimes they don't even talk and try to hand you stuff like balloons. For even the most cynically steel-plated among us, it's universally agreed that certain clowns are in fact super scary: Pennywise from It ; the clown bed from The Simpsons , and Binky the Clown from the Garfield Halloween special.
Look at him: He's terrifying! The angry brows, the skeleton's teeth, the narrowed yellow eyes?? And what weirdly makes him even scarier is that he's not the villain of this special. He's not evil, he's not violent, he's not out to get Garfield. He just utterly terrifying because that's just the way the world is.
Half a minute into the special and already you're pitched into a cruel and horrific world. Did you know Edit. Trivia The boat that Odie and Garfield use to get to the haunted house is named "Carolyn" - a reference to Garfield creator Jim Davis 's first wife. Goofs Odie's gold hoop earring is switches from his left ear to the right ear eleven times in the special.
Crazy credits Lorenzo Music's name is listed twice under "Vocals". Alternate versions Originally, this TV special was titled "Garfield in Disguise" when first aired, however, it was later re-titled "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" with a new title card for subsequent re-airings. Connections Featured in Garfield: Holiday Celebrations User reviews 31 Review. Top review. One of the best Halloween cartoons. This one I remember back, way back. It's a well written, well animated, excellently voiced Halloween special.
Adults can actually watch it for the plot. It has a wonderful mood to it. Not like the junk we see today, like the stuff that gets computer cranked out. Unfortunately it never seems to get back on TV. This and Spongebob's Halloween where he dresses up like the Flying Dutchman and Patrick tries to make him scary are classics.
Im not sure if it might scare very young children, it is just good fun. Some kids just more sensitive to these things.
In that case you might want to seek out the book, Garfield's Halloween Adventure Formerly Titled Garfield in Disguise and read it to them first.
Garfield refuses to believe it until the old man claims to be the cabin boy from the very pirate ship. Garfield and Odie decide to leave, but they find that the old man has suddenly disappeared and stolen their boat. The clock chimes midnight and Garfield and Odie watch a ghostly ship materialize on the river while the ghosts emerge. Garfield and Odie scramble to find a place to hide before they choose a cupboard.
They watch the pirate ghosts bring the treasure chest out from under the floorboards, before Odie gives their presence away by sneezing. The ghosts chase them out the house and down the dock. Without other options, Garfield and Odie jump into the water. Upon entering the water, Garfield remembers that he cannot swim.
He almost drowns but Odie saves him. While Garfield reflects on the night, he and Odie find their boat with their candy on the shore. They go home happy, and upon their return, Garfield reluctantly rewards Odie with his half of the candy for rescuing him many times. Garfield turns on the TV and sees the same old man with Garfield's lost pirate hat hosting an all-night pirate movie festival. Garfield abruptly turns off the TV and goes to bed. The book adaptation, which retains the original title "Garfield In Disguise," deviates in only a few ways.
