Then you can sell it to someone else who doesn't care about high shutter count, and bring in probably half what you paid, if not more. DSLR bodies are what I list as consumables, unlike lenses. In other words, don't sweat the shutter count. Heck, even if the shutter craps out on you, you can very likely send it in to Nikon and have it replaced for a couple hundred dollars, and still end up paying less than the typical current used price of a D, and you'll have a brand new shutter to boot.

No, not all cameras provide that information unless you get an OEM service. But why worry about it? Shutters are fairly reliable and fixable and unless you do a lot of sport on maximum burst rate the general condition of the camera matters more. It's easy to get a shutter count. It has one shutter Sorry, coat got Shutter "lives" are given as mean time to failure, they're not guarantees, so there's not really any value in knowing the count - if half the shutters fail at 1 shot, and the other half fail at ,, then the mean time to failure is ,, but that figure wouldn't help you much without understanding the distribution of failures.

I press the shutter button and nothing happens. I turn off the camera and the shutter actuates, getting a black photo, and when I turn the camera on again everything works fine. It might be the shutter starting to go, but the way you describe it there is a significant possibility that something else is going on. I would suggest calling Nikon and maybe they can point out something obvious that might be switched over in your settings that is causing mirror lockup or something like bracketing or delayed firing I can't remember what Nikon calls that in your menus.
One way to investigate whether you've "flipped a switch" somewhere that may be causing this is to check all the buttons on the outside of your camera to make sure they are where they should be, and if they are, do a full camera reset using the two button reset push the two buttons on the top of your camera that are green at the same time for 2 seconds - the Quality button and the EV button I think.

Randy Actually, I don't remember ever talking about the cost effectiveness difference between pro and consumer models, but when you think of it, the cost of a shutter replacement after the warranty runs out will be a much higher percentage relative to the original purchase price of the camera on an inexpensive camera.
