So the major crystal rhinestone brands are swarovski and preciosa. Swarovski is an Austrian based company and Preciosa is a Czech company. They are both well-known for high-quality crystals. Here we have 14mm sew-on rivoli rhinestones. The left one is Swarovski and the right one is Preciosa.
They both have amazing sparkles and great depth of shine. These are both crystal AB, and the Swarovski one appears to show more blue and green, whereas the Preciosa one appears more pink and purple. Price wise, for these rivolis, they are very similar as well at Dreamtime Creations. Elektrische Ausstellung" First Electrical Exhibition in Vienna, he had the idea of his life: the new techniques from Siemens and Edison inspired him to develop a machine for cutting crystal.
He worked day and night at realizing his vision. Finally, nine years later , he was ready to register a patent: a machine which, for the first time, made it possible to cut crystal to perfection.
It was far faster and more precise than the manual work to date. Now we understand why Swarovski crystal costs more. The higher price tag is not without a reason. Nevertheless, I've read on the internet that Preciosa crystal is a good alternative to Swarovski crystals if you are looking for a more cost friendly crystal beads.
I have not personally seen nor know of the price of Preciosa crystal before so I can't compare. A browse through their site feels like deja vu though. Whether if it's a fact or not, I do not know since there's no authority on this. That is why I'm saying that it's something interesting. This is how the story goes. Preciosa Crystals is older that Swarovski Crystals. Then, like now, Preciosa Crystals was located in Jablonek, Czechoslovakia. Daniel Swarovski worked for Preciosa under its previous name in the mid's.
He learned all there was to learn about making crystals, and had a nice little career for himself. Then, as in many times and places throughout history, things got ugly for the Jews. Swarovski packed up his family and left Jablonek for Austria, and set up shop. Swarovski crystals are made by Swarovski, in Austria. Preciosa crystals are made in the Czech Republic. I'd think Preciosa is Swarovski's main competitor and the other way 'round, but I don't think their market is quite the same.
Not a whole lot, but HTH. Preciosa is quite a bit less expensive, but for the time being I'll stick with Swarovski. Especially I like their "googy" colors Old childhood word for, unsurprisingly, colors that are not bright and clear.
You know, like "googy green" would be olive. Anyway, their "satins" are greyed, yet still have brilliance, and are perfect with boro. I have Preciosas, from Czech, too, and they are similar in quality in that you don't get poorly cut ones or strange color lots and they have nice clear colors.
But they don't have nearly as many colors. They have sapphire and fuchsia, eg, but not the more interesting colors like Indicolite or light Olivine. I especially like is a milky AB can't remember what it's called , that has more substance than the clear, which can kind of look like an empty spot in the jewelry.
I like the Satin Light Colorado Topaz the best. It is great against the skin. Warm with "antiqued" silver. And again it has enough color not to look like an empty spot in a necklace. So I get the Preciosa in the more common colors because it costs less, but usually I get Swarovski because I like the colors better. I love the latter two and have more of them than anything else.
